How do I authorize Expatax as my Canadian Tax Representative?
Why should I authorize Expatax as my Canadian Tax Representative?
The Canada Revenue Agency is, rightfully so!, very careful about who they will disclose any type of information to online or over the phone. Adding Expatax Services Ltd. as an authorized representative allows me to access the information that I need to complete your return and helps to ensure completeness as the Canada Revenue Agency may have information online that you did not receive in the mail. An example of this is a T4 slip for a small amount that you forgot you were supposed to get, misplaced after opening it or which got lost in the mail. There are penalties associated with missing income slips so it is very important that all information is included. If you discover after your tax return has been filed that you missed an income item of some sort it needs to be corrected right away either by yourself or myself. If you wish to purchase a return through my store please be very sure you have all your information before ordering.
You may authorize Expatax Services Ltd. as either level 1 or 2. Level 1 allows me to sign into Represent a Client and see the same things you can see when you sign into My Account on the Canada Revenue Agency website. Level 2 allows me to make changes to your account - for example request an online adjustment if an additional slip arrived in the mail that you were not expecting. For a more complete list of what each level allows please see "Levels of Authorization" on page 2 of the sample authorization form attached below.
Authorizations may be on going or have a defined end date. If you are likely to use my services again in the future then it is best to leave it open ended. You may revoke the authorization anytime by calling the Canada Revenue Agency or by logging into My Account. If you are probably only going to use my services this year then you can provide an expiry date. I would suggest six to nine months after the return is due so that if the Canada Revenue Agency does something strange when they process your tax return I will be still be able to see your information in order to be able to help sort out what happened and fix it. If the Canada Revenue Agency is going to send any letters requesting more information they usually do so within six months of when the return was filed. If you change your mind and do decide to come back then you simply need to reauthorize Expatax Services Ltd. again for the year.
Dealing with the Canada Revenue Agency over the phone is very time consuming so when completing the authorization make sure you authorize me for online access (Part 2, Section A) and not phone only access (Part 2, Section B)
What if I don't want to authorize Expatax as my Canadian Tax Representive?
That is your prerogative however it will make your tax return preparation fees slightly higher (noted in the product descriptions where this applies) and invalidates free T1Adjusts for missed slips where applicable and free follow up on Canada Revenue Agency letters requesting more information where applicable. I can still do your return with the information that you provide directly via Box or Drop box however it is more time consuming and the chances of some important information being over looked is much greater.
