If you are an experienced Canadian and US preparer
You will prepare files for me around your own schedule subject to IRS and client deadlines at home as my office is entirely paperless. Everything can be dealt with online. If you are an experienced Canadian only preparer You will prepare files for me around your own schedule subject to IRS and client deadlines at home as my office is entirely paperless. In my experience with previous assistants it is somewhat difficult to learn US taxes remotely however. If you are in the West Kelowna area you will work at my office for the first few weeks. Work hours are very flexible but at least six hours at a time. If you do not live within commuting distance then I am willing to consider you if you have extensive (3+ tax seasons) Canadian experience which will make it easier to learn US taxes remotely. If you have no or very little experience preparing tax returns You will work at my office in West Kelowna until you are comfortable enough that you can work from home, likely two to three months. Work hours are very flexible but at least six hours at a time. |
Remuneration
Pay is based on a percentage of billings for the files that you work and is paid upon completion of files. I start everyone out at 15% of billings for at least the first few files. For a reasonably efficient inexperienced preparer this will likely average out to minimum wage over tax season and perhaps as high as $15/hr for an exceptionally bright and efficient but inexperienced assistant. Someone at this level would not be dealing with clients directly at all. All communication with clients would be done through me.
Raises are dependent on how much time I have to spend teaching you and reviewing your work. The first raise to 20% comes generally after 500 hours or so of experience in a public practice environment. Someone that has already worked one tax season full time at a public practice firm will be at this level fairly quickly because while I will likely have to spend at least a few files teaching you US taxes you should have a good grasp on Canadian taxes already and many of the concepts are the same in both countries. This generally equates to $15-$20/hr for someone that is reasonably efficient after one full time tax season.
I am willing to go as high as 30% of billings for someone that is experienced enough to hand in correct and complete files on the first pass. You would be responsible for meeting all the client's tax needs directly and my involvement would be doing a quick review of your work at the end to ensure nothing was overlooked. No one will start this high as it will take at least a few files to get used to the way I do things but a manager with 3-5 years of full time preparation experience in a public practice environment preparing both Canadian and US files would get to 30% very quickly. For a very efficient, knowledgeable preparer, 30% of billings could average $50/hr or more.

There are partnership opportunities for the right person. To be considered, you must complete at least one tax season of experience reviewing Canadian and US returns at my firm as a manager and be performing at the 30% pay level indicating that I very rarely find that you missed something when I review your work.
If you are an experienced reviewer or a preparer with at least three tax seasons experience with preparing Canadian personal and corporate returns part of your duties will be reviewing the Canadian personal and corporate work of my current junior level assistant before I do the final sign off. Partnership possibilities can be discussed starting as early as January 2018.
