If you want me to prepare this type of return I will need you to authorize me as a representative before I can do anything. Please authorize Expatax and check that all your slips are already available online for each person needing a tax return before contacting me!
If you have additional slips such as medical expenses not reported on your T4, donations not reported on a T4, tuition slips or student loan interest among other things you will need a basic personal Canadian income tax return.
Returns for years earlier than 2014 can be done however they can not be e-filed and so are not eligible for free or discounted rates. You may do earlier returns for standard pricing.
If you are married or common-law I must be doing returns for both of you although you can have different types of returns. I will allow a very basic personal Canadian income tax return to be combined with a basic personal Canadian income tax return or a complex personal Canadian income tax return as long as the total number of slips is under 20 for for the household.
When you contact me to tell me that you have authorized Expatax as your tax representative you need to tell me the following:
You must be able to access My Account and check that all slips you are expecting are on the system already. It may take a while for the CRA to show all the slips.
You may have the following unlimited types of income slips:
You may have the following deductions:
This type of return is simple enough that you should be able to to do them yourself. If you would like to try I recommend simpletax.ca for the simplest of Canadian Tax Returns which is what these are. It is free to use and very straight forward. You can net file your return when you are done.

When you contact me to tell me that you have authorized Expatax as your tax representative you need to tell me the following:
- whether you want your completed return sent you via dropbox or box
- the mailing address you want the Canada Revenue Agency to use for the return
- whether you are a Canadian citizen or not and whether you want the voter registration to be notified of your address
- your filing status - i.e. married - and if it is different from last year what date it changed in 2016 and what it was in 2015
- confirm that you were a tax resident of Canada for the entire year
- confirm that you do not have foreign property with a total cost of more than $100,000 Cnd. (i.e. you don't need form T1135). If that is the case you need to upgrade to a complex personal Canadian tax return.
- confirm that you already have direct deposit set up with the Canada Revenue Agency
- if you have a child that you can claim as an eligible dependent provide the name and birthday of the child and confirm that you do not pay child support to an ex-spouse for this child

- T3's (issued by mutual funds) do not have to be issued until March 31st so they may be very late.
- If you have the paper slips but they do not yet show up on line and you do not want to wait then you need to upgrade to a basic personal Canadian tax return.
